My friend photographer Gen gave me a big challenge— "How Hasui Kawase would draw the view of today's Sumida river?" Hasui Kawase is a great (and my favorite!) Ukiyoe artist from 100 years ago who created the modern Ukiyoe style in the era. Ukiyo-e reflects the period of the age, such as lifestyles, cityscapes, fashion, technology, and record the impression of the moment. Wow, It is a challenge. I should channel him…but how? The result is this piece. I can't draw Hasui's art (of course NOT!) but tried to bring a bit of his taste to my illustration.
