Tenjinsha is a shrine dedicated to Michizane Sugawara, a scholar in the Heian period (AD794-1185). Michizane Sugawara=Tenjin represented study and scholarship and became a guardian of students, scholars, and school entrance examinee. The shrine was originally built in 1104. Minamoto Yoritomo officially constructed the shrine building as a protection of a daemon gate.
